How to get a strong and healthy back
Chronic back pain is a common problem affecting around 80% of the
world’s population at some point in life. That is four out of every five
people! There is a high chance that you have suffered previously, are
suffering currently or will be suffering from back pain in the future.
Anyone who has suffered from back pain knows how limiting this can be
when trying to get on with your daily activities.
A major cause of this back pain “epidemic” is our sedentary lifestyle.
We are sitting more and more in office chairs, on lounges, in cars, etc.
After sitting for long periods of time, your muscles start to become
tired and tense – putting a lot of strain on your back and on your
posture in general. Over time, this can then develop into a chronic
condition and even lead to more serious injuries of the spine.
The solution to this problem is to get out of your chair more often –
maybe go for a walk in the morning or in your lunchbreak. It is
important to exercise regularly.
Yoga, Pilates and Yoga/Pilates fusions such as Yogalates, Yogilates,
Core Yoga, PiYo and Piloga are excellent for strengthening and
stretching the muscles around the spine as well as the abdominal muscles
creating a strong foundation – often referred to as core strength or
core stability. This will not only speed the recovery from back aches,
it will also improve your posture and prevent its recurrence.
But don’t stop exercising once your back problems disappear. Regular
exercise is vital in maintaining a healthy back. Just 15-20 minutes of
exercise daily will create a huge difference. Exercising should become
part of your routine, just as much as brushing your teeth – it is just
as important!
